Feeling good

You usually feel good when someone calls you after a long period of time.

You feel so good that someone still remembers you.

Though you feel happier when someone who means a lot to you calls you.

Their phone calls are just what you need; especially when you hear their voice, laugh and joy.

It’s great that new technology keeps us closer.

Having unrealistic expectations

Many business owners, especially those who want to startup a business, usually have unrealistic expectations when it comes to sales. Owners, who usually have high expectations, fail in the first 3 years of operations as they expect to make tons of cash as soon as they open. Their previous experience with big companies let them think that they can achieve the sales that they are used to hit every single year.

To succeed running a new start-up, you need to consider the following:

  1. Minimize your cost – do not over-hire employees
  2. have realistic profit margins – make sure you price your services way below big competitors
  3. expand your client base – take a small portion of your client’s work and then expand
  4. ask others for help – I don’t know is a good habit
  5. deliver quickly to clients – focus on delivery not on showing off your knowledge and brilliance

Big companies

  1. cannot lower its cost due its huge operating and financing expenses
  2. have a large profit margin to satisfy its greedy shareholders
  3. have a big client base where they do not mind lose some to small competitors
  4. have managers and departments with big-egos where they are not used to ask for help. However, they order and force junior employees to deliver what they cannot deliver or have no knowledge about to deliver.
  5. won’t deliver quickly due to its bureaucratic layers.

Take these as an advice to have realistic expectations when selling your products and services.

The importance of white lies

It is extremely important to keep lying when you are doing business; especially when you are living, working and/or travelling to the Middle East and North Africa.

For instance, if you are having a business lunch, you will be asked what do you think of our food or country? you will automatically answer that is “FANTASTIC”, “I LOVE IT’ or something like that.

I know that a lot of people are against lying and we have been taught that it is a bad habit. Though, life will force you to praise your client (even if you know) that he is a corrupt person, otherwise he won’t buy your products or services.

All in all, people lie because they want to survive and for most of us means justify the ends.

Fresh Graduates Have The Upper Hand Now!

The petrodollar influence is diminishing gradually as it has shifted into a few unproductive and not revenue generating directions which are:

  1. Buying luxurious products;
  2. Inflating real estate and basic commodities prices;
  3. Living beyond our means;
  4. Financing endless wars;
  5. Creating unproductive jobs;
  6. Financing our growth with debt;
  7. Having under or over regulated markets; and
  8. Focusing on gaining power and popularity.

The abovementioned economic diseases are not relevant to fresh graduates who are dying to get out of unemployment. The main concern of those fresh graduates is getting a job with the aim of getting back their confidence and cover their basic needs and wants.

Realistically, most fresh graduates won’t be focusing on buying luxurious products such as Ferrari cars, large apartments or Rolex watches. As mentioned earlier, they need someone to give them an opportunity to apply what they have learnt back at the school or university and live within their means.

Therefore, the Gulf countries should shift its focus from hiring expensive expats, who will leave the Gulf whenever things go bad, to hiring fresh graduates from neighboring countries, who have waited months or perhaps years to have a job offer and even if things go bad, they have no alternative back at their home countries.

For example, this strategy for hiring fresh graduates can ignite the market for used cars. As fresh graduates cannot afford buying a new car or are not creditworthy yet to borrow from banks, they can simply save money and borrow money from friends or family, which is the conventional way or borrowing, without having the burden of interest expense.

In addition, Gulf nationals would keep good reselling prices for their cars as the demand will increase on those used cars.

Moreover, the Gulf countries can also develop their transport infrastructure as the demand on those services will increase because those fresh graduates are willing to use them to save money rather than spending it on fueling their cars and paying installments.

In the same time, recruiting fresh graduates will open the opportunity for experienced Gulf nationals to occupy top position in the private sector as the experienced non-nationals are not likely to stay if there is downsizing or salary cuts.

Lastly, those fresh graduates have the ability to revive the economies of the Gulf countries as they are still young and still have a lot to give.

Why do we give up?

Why me or even anyone decides to give up, is more likely because we aren’t getting a return out of our efforts and attempts to achieve something.

How many times you joined the gym where you tried to lose weight or getting muscles and eventually after a couple of weeks you decide not go anymore.

This is the first mistake we, humans, always do. We under-estimate or don’t measure properly how long it should take to achieve your goal.

How many times in the middle of your job search, you decided to give up looking for a job where you desperately need a job to pay your bills?

This is the second mistake we, humans, always do. We demand quick response for our goals. We expect that the next employer must interview you whenever he sees your CV. This is bullshit. No one really reads your CV or gives a crap about it. You should consider that this employer has a limited budget for hiring additional employees and definitely prefers someone who is affordable and simply can do the job.

This is the fucked up truth. Measure twice and cut once!
